Dr. Runde has been board-certified in occupational medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine since 2001. He has demonstrated his continued mastery of occupational medicine by recertification in 2011.
Dr. Runde grew up in mid-Missouri (Mexico). His father worked at National Refractories as a blue-collar worker and they saw the “company doctor” as the doctor who sends sick people back to work. After completing his residency in occupational medicine, Dr. Runde returned “home” to fill the void in quality occupational medicine he saw in mid-Missouri.
He attended Washington University in St. Louis where he received his AB in Biology with a minor in Math. He then attended the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine, earning his MD. Dr. Runde was a recipient of the US Navy’s Health Professions Scholarship Program and was on active duty following graduation from Medical School.
During his time with the Navy Dr. Runde was trained as a US Naval Flight Surgeon in Pensacola, Florida. After that year of training, he was assigned to be the Senior Medical Officer at Naval Security Group Activity-Winter Harbor, Maine. While training to be a flight surgeon, Dr. Runde’s interest in occupational medicine grew. Upon completion of his active duty in 1998, Dr. Runde was accepted into the Occupational and Environmental Medicine residency program at St. Louis University. As a first year resident, he was awarded the Occupational Physicians Scholarship, which was a national scholarship program. A requirement of the OEM program was completion of the Master’s in Public Health degree, with an emphasis in occupational and environmental health.
